Impedance control in an HDI stackup depends on the finished conductor geometry, dielectric construction and reference arrangement. A target such as 50 ohms is incomplete without identifying the relevant layers, trace type, tolerance and verification method. Dense routing makes these details especially important because local geometry can change quickly.
Use finished dimensions in the model
Distinguish artwork width from the expected finished conductor width and shape. Obtain the fabricator's proposed dielectric thicknesses and modeling values for the actual material construction. A nominal laminate value copied from another test condition may not be the right input for the channel model.
Identify whether each structure is single-ended or differential and whether it is referenced to one or more planes. Solder mask and neighboring copper can matter for some structures. Select an appropriate field model when a simple calculator does not represent the geometry.

| Field | Example of the information needed |
|---|---|
| Net group and layer | Which routes the requirement applies to |
| Target and tolerance | The permitted range and measurement basis |
| Reference construction | Plane locations, dielectric layers and relevant copper geometry |
| Verification | Coupon representation, measurement method and required report |
Review transitions separately
A uniform trace calculation does not characterize the whole BGA escape or via transition. Pads, antipads, reference changes and short neck-downs can introduce discontinuities. Review them against the interface requirements rather than assuming a nominal trace impedance guarantees channel performance.
For an illustrative stackup revision, reducing a build-up dielectric thickness can require a different trace width to retain the target impedance. Confirm that the revised width still fits the escape and manufacturing rules. This is why stackup and routing should be approved together.
Control fabrication adjustments
Agree whether the fabricator may adjust artwork widths to meet finished impedance and define the boundaries of that permission. Changes near pads or tightly coupled structures may need explicit engineering review. Keep the final proposed geometry in the release record.
The site's microstrip and stripline calculator is a screening tool with stated assumptions. It does not replace a field solver, supplier modeling or measurement of an agreed coupon. Use its results to identify questions, then request a reviewed stackup and exact quotation. Company-specific impedance tolerances and measurement capabilities are [NEEDS CLIENT INPUT].
