HDI signal integrity depends on the full interconnect path, including traces, pads, vias and reference transitions. Short microvia connections can change the geometry of a channel, but density or shortness alone does not guarantee good electrical performance. Review the structures against the actual interface requirements.
Follow signal and return paths together
Map each layer transition and the reference conductor used before and after it. A signal may have a clear route while its return current faces an interruption or an inconvenient transition. Keep plane splits, voids and reference changes visible during the routing review.
Identify the interface's relevant edge rates, channel length and performance limits. A clock frequency by itself may not describe the interconnect bandwidth that matters. Use component guidance and the appropriate system model to define what must be evaluated.
Channel review map
| Region | Review focus |
|---|---|
| BGA escape | Local neck-downs, pad discontinuities and reference access |
| Layer transition | Via geometry, antipads and return-path continuity |
| Uniform routing | Finished impedance geometry, coupling and material loss |
| Connector or package interface | Interaction with the rest of the channel model |
Keep models tied to finished geometry
Obtain the proposed material construction and finished dimensions from the fabricator. If the stackup changes, update the relevant electrical model. A simulation based on an earlier dielectric thickness or copper geometry can stop representing the manufactured board even when the netlist is unchanged.
For an illustrative comparison, evaluate two escape structures with the same endpoints and interface requirements. Include the pad and reference geometry, not only the length of the signal conductor. Choose the supported construction whose modeled and verified behavior meets the product need.
Connect analysis with verification
Define how the project will check the assumptions that matter, using suitable coupons, measurements or system tests. Record the configuration and method with the results. A trace-impedance measurement is valuable but does not by itself establish every aspect of channel performance.
Control changes to via arrangement, material and plane structure after release. Route those changes through engineering even when they appear to simplify fabrication. The browser impedance calculator is an early screening aid; it does not replace an appropriate field model or full channel assessment. Verified company test capabilities remain [NEEDS CLIENT INPUT].
