PCB rework and repair require a defined objective, authorized work scope and a verification plan. Rework intended to bring an assembly into its specified configuration differs from troubleshooting an unknown failure. Establish what may be changed, what records are required and how the unit will be accepted afterward.
Define the work and deliverable
Identify the affected assemblies and their history, including previous modifications or failed repair attempts. Some conditions may make further work inappropriate or uneconomic. A project-specific assessment should determine whether the proposed operation is feasible and what evidence is needed; this page does not promise recovery of every board.
Files and requirements to send
- Board revision, schematic or relevant design information, assembly drawing and identification of affected components.
- Failure symptoms, available test results, unit history and the exact permitted replacement or modification.
- Acceptance requirements, traceability needs, approved replacement parts and instructions for unsuccessful units.
Decisions to close before release
| Decision | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Diagnosis boundary | Separate a fixed replacement operation from investigation whose outcome is not yet known. |
| Authorization | Identify the permitted changes, escalation point and conditions that require customer approval. |
| Post-work verification | Define inspection, functional checks and documentation after the authorized operation. |
A practical planning example
Replacing a visibly damaged component may not resolve the underlying cause. Explain whether the request is simply to replace that part or to investigate and correct the failure. Agree how diagnosis time, additional parts and unrecoverable units are handled before work begins.
Can a repaired unit be treated as equivalent to a new unit?
That depends on the product requirements, the work performed and the approved disposition. Record the repair or rework history and apply the agreed acceptance process. Do not conceal modifications in the shipment record.
Compare the complete proposal
Ask for the included work, exclusions, setup charges, material responsibilities and schedule dependencies in writing. Use the quote comparison checklist to keep the same configuration and acceptance scope across offers.
