HDI PCBs can help package dense electronics in medical devices, but routing density does not establish medical suitability. The board's role, product risks, operating conditions and required records determine the manufacturing and verification plan. A diagnostic instrument, wearable monitor and life-support subsystem should not be treated as one generic application.
Translate product risk into board requirements
Identify the board functions whose failure could affect the device's intended performance. Define the relevant configuration controls, traceability and acceptance evidence with the device manufacturer. Keep those requirements connected to the design and risk-management process rather than adding generic inspection steps without a purpose.
For U.S. medical-device work, FDA states that the Quality Management System Regulation became effective on February 2, 2026. The device manufacturer's regulatory assessment determines how applicable requirements flow to suppliers. A contract PCB service should not imply that a board purchase alone establishes device compliance.
Medical HDI planning record
| Topic | Project-specific decision |
|---|---|
| Configuration | Approved stackup, BOM, firmware and assembly variants |
| Traceability | Required linkage between product units, material and manufacturing records |
| Interconnect evidence | Verification representing the selected construction and relevant exposure |
| Change control | Who evaluates and approves material, process or supplier changes |
Plan for the actual use environment
Document relevant cleaning, moisture, thermal or mechanical conditions without assuming that every medical product experiences the same exposure. Evaluate the board in its intended enclosure and assembly. If sterilization or another specialized process is relevant, the product team must define and validate the applicable conditions.
An illustrative supplier substitution may leave the board dimensions unchanged while altering the material or microvia process. Review its effect on the device's approved configuration and evidence before accepting it. Commercial availability alone is not a complete change justification.
Make the RFQ reviewable
Provide the manufacturing package, relevant quality requirements, acceptance plan and required records. Identify which decisions remain with the device manufacturer and which deliverables the supplier must provide. Define deviation and nonconformance approval responsibilities before the first build.
