Microvia reliability concerns the interconnection's behavior through manufacturing, assembly and service exposure. Room-temperature continuity and a visually acceptable sampled section provide useful information, but they do not answer every question about interfaces that may become unstable under thermal stress.
Connect the evidence to the actual structure
Describe the via spans, aligned or offset arrangement, materials and copper interfaces in the qualification discussion. Evidence from another construction should be assessed for relevance rather than accepted solely because it also uses microvias. Identify the most demanding path in the design and how the acceptance plan represents it.
IPC's published warning identifies latent microvia-interface failures and limitations of traditional microsection inspection alone. It supports a discussion of performance-based evidence; it does not supply a universal acceptance recipe for every product.
Build the acceptance discussion
| Question | Record to agree |
|---|---|
| What exposure matters? | Relevant assembly, rework and service conditions |
| Which structure is represented? | A coupon or test vehicle tied to the production stackup |
| What is measured? | Electrical and physical evidence with defined acceptance criteria |
| Who resolves a failure? | Disposition authority and required corrective-action records |
Avoid overinterpreting a passing result
A test demonstrates behavior under its stated conditions. Record the specimen construction, process revision, exposure and measurement method so that its meaning remains clear. Do not describe a small successful sample as proof of a universal lifetime or zero failure risk.
For an illustrative supplier change, compare the new material system and via arrangement with the original validation baseline. If the new process alters a critical interface, engineering should decide what additional evidence is needed before relying on the earlier result.
Use failures to improve the release process
Keep failed units and relevant process records available for analysis. Distinguish an interconnect issue from a solder-joint or component failure through an appropriate investigation. A symptom appearing during functional test does not by itself identify the physical cause.
Close corrective actions against the specific construction and confirm that the released drawing includes the resulting controls. Procurement should preserve these requirements on recurring orders and flag proposed changes. This guide describes an evidence-based review process; it does not claim qualification results, test equipment or reliability statistics for the website's operator.
