HDI planning for automotive electronics must reflect the board's location, function and lifetime expectations. A cabin interface and an underhood controller can face very different conditions. Specify the application before comparing stackups, materials or supplier claims, and connect the board requirements with the responsible vehicle or subsystem program.
Define the mission profile
Document the relevant temperature, humidity, vibration, electrical loading and operating cycles supplied by the product team. Include the intended assembly and service configuration. Do not assume one generic “automotive grade” label captures those conditions or the evidence required for acceptance.
Identify which construction changes could affect the product's qualification baseline. Materials, microvia arrangements and process routes need explicit change control even when the external board outline and netlist remain unchanged.
Automotive HDI review table
| Area | Requirement to define |
|---|---|
| Environment | Location-specific exposure and performance criteria |
| Construction | Approved materials, layer structure and via arrangements |
| Validation | Evidence tied to the intended product and manufacturing configuration |
| Supply continuity | Change notifications, alternate-source strategy and retained records |
Evaluate the complete assembly
Dense devices, connectors and mechanical restraints can interact with the board under thermal and mechanical loading. Review mounting and enclosure interfaces alongside the stackup. A bare-board result should not automatically be treated as evidence for every behavior of the assembled module.
For an illustrative second-source evaluation, compare the proposed fabricator's construction with the existing approved baseline. Record differences in material, via path and acceptance evidence. The program owner should decide which differences require additional verification before the supplier enters production.
Prepare the supplier handoff
Provide the controlled fabrication package, application requirements, required qualification or approval process, and the exact standards or customer documents that apply. Ask the supplier to state exceptions rather than silently assuming a generic industry classification.
Define how nonconforming material, process changes and urgent substitutions are approved. Retain traceability and evidence according to the program's actual requirements. Do not insert a universal retention period or certification claim without the governing agreement.
Verified automotive certifications, customer approvals, production history and test capabilities for this site's operator remain [NEEDS CLIENT INPUT]. This guide supplies questions for engineering and procurement; it does not promise automotive qualification or a particular operating-temperature range.
