The surface finish on an HDI PCB must support the component terminations, assembly process and storage plan. Fine-pitch density makes pad condition and consistency important, but it does not identify one finish that is best for every product. Define the soldering and reliability requirements before comparing options.
Start with the assembly process
Identify component land patterns, planned soldering steps, any wire-bond or contact requirements, and relevant storage or handling constraints. Ask the assembler and fabricator to review the finish together. A choice made only from bare-board cost can create additional process or inspection needs later.
Where vias lie within pads, specify the underlying fill and cap construction separately. The surface finish does not substitute for an appropriately prepared soldering surface or resolve every issue beneath it.
Finish comparison worksheet
| Requirement | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Fine-pitch pad condition | What finished surface characteristics does printing and soldering require? |
| Process sequence | How many relevant soldering or thermal events are planned? |
| Storage and handling | What controls and acceptance checks are needed before assembly? |
| Special interfaces | Are there contacts, bonding surfaces or other nonsoldering requirements? |
Compare supported options
Ask each supplier to explain the proposed finish, applicable specification and exclusions for the actual product. Avoid treating a generic finish family name as a complete purchase requirement. Required thickness, measurement and acceptance details belong in the approved documentation where applicable.
For an illustrative fine-pitch build, assess the finish alongside stencil design and pad geometry. A process issue attributed to finish may also involve paste deposition, contamination or the underlying pad surface. Investigate the complete interface before changing one variable.
Control substitutions and acceptance
Record the selected finish in the fabrication drawing and quote. Require review of alternatives before manufacture, including any effect on assembly qualification or other interfaces. Keep storage and handling instructions associated with the delivered lot where required.
At incoming review, compare the received documentation with the ordered construction and investigate discrepancies before assembly consumes the boards. Preserve relevant evidence when evaluating solderability or surface-related issues.
