HDI PCB assembly brings dense routing, fine-pitch components and hidden connections into a single process. The bare board may pass fabrication checks while the assembly still needs careful printing, placement, thermal-profile and inspection planning. Coordinate the board construction with the actual component packages before release.

Begin with the soldering interface

Review land patterns, solder mask, via-in-pad surfaces and stencil apertures together. The board fabricator and assembler should agree what the finished pads will look like and which variations are acceptable. A generic instruction to fill vias does not define every surface characteristic relevant to paste printing.

Use the component manufacturer's handling and soldering information for the exact package. Dense placement can combine parts with different thermal masses and access restrictions. Identify these constraints during process planning rather than assuming one earlier profile applies unchanged.

Assembly handoff checklist

Package item Purpose
BOM and placement data Align part identity, rotation, side and no-fit variants
Assembly drawing Identify polarity, critical clearances and special handling
Fabrication construction Explain filled vias, surface finish and board constraints
Test and inspection plan Define coverage for hidden joints and functional behavior

Plan inspection around what can be observed

Visual inspection, X-ray and electrical or functional tests provide different types of information. Specify the purpose of each and the acceptance criteria. A passing functional test may not exercise every connection under the conditions that matter in service; an image alone does not verify all electrical behavior.

Make room for programming and test access while the layout is still flexible. Dense routing can remove convenient probe locations, making a later test fixture more difficult or forcing a redesign. Define which signals and power states the manufacturing test actually needs.

Manage the first build and rework

Use the pilot to capture soldering observations, deviations, inspection findings and test failures against the exact configuration. Record approved component substitutes and firmware versions. Distinguish a design correction from a process adjustment so that the next build has an unambiguous baseline.

Review rework feasibility for tightly packed or thermally sensitive regions. Replacing a device may add exposure to the board and surrounding parts; it should follow an approved method and disposition process.
