Functional testing evaluates an assembly or product against defined operating requirements. The test scope should describe the setup, stimulus, observed response, limits and records so that “pass” has the same meaning for the customer, manufacturer and the person reviewing a failed unit.
Define the work and deliverable
Specify the functions that matter at shipment and distinguish them from longer design-verification or qualification activities. The test may depend on firmware, external loads, sensors, communication partners or mechanical configuration. Identify who provides and maintains each dependency, including any software license or access required to execute the test.
Files and requirements to send
- A controlled test procedure or agreed requirements from which the procedure will be developed.
- Firmware and configuration identifiers, fixture drawings or interfaces, expected input conditions and pass/fail limits.
- Result format, unit identification, retention expectations, retest rules and authorization for troubleshooting or repair.
Decisions to close before release
| Decision | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Reproducibility | Document setup, connections, sequence and conditions needed to repeat the check. |
| Limits | Identify measurable acceptance limits and distinguish warnings from release-blocking failures. |
| Failure handling | Define containment, diagnosis, repair approval and the evidence needed after a correction. |
A practical planning example
A test labeled “communication OK” is difficult to interpret without the interface, data exchange and expected response. Document the transaction or behavior being checked and which product configurations it covers. If the firmware changes, assess whether the same test procedure and limits remain valid.
Who owns the functional test fixture and program?
That must be agreed in the proposal. Clarify development charges, ownership, maintenance, calibration responsibilities where applicable, access to test results and the handoff required if the production source changes.
Compare the complete proposal
Ask for the included work, exclusions, setup charges, material responsibilities and schedule dependencies in writing. Use the quote comparison checklist to keep the same configuration and acceptance scope across offers.
