A sheet-metal enclosure RFQ should describe how the enclosure fits, protects and supports the electronics. Material and overall size are only part of the definition. Mounting features, finish, assembly order, connector access and inspection datums often determine whether the finished enclosure works with the PCB and cable assembly.
Release a consistent drawing and model
Use matching revisions for the drawing, three-dimensional model and assembly definition. Identify the controlling dimensions, tolerances and reference datums. Where a model and drawing could be interpreted differently, resolve the precedence before quotation. A supplier should not need to infer whether a dimension describes an outside surface, an inside surface or a formed feature.
Specify the material grade and thickness requirements, then review manufacturability with the intended process. Ask which bend, cutting and fastening assumptions affect the quoted geometry. Do not assume that a general material name or a nominal flat pattern completely defines the formed part.
Check the electronics interfaces
| Interface | Review question |
|---|---|
| PCB mounting | Do mounting points, standoff heights and tolerance accumulation match the board? |
| Connectors | Is there clearance for mating, latching and cable strain relief? |
| Thermal path | Are contact surfaces, interface materials and assembly pressure defined? |
| Electrical contact | Which areas require controlled conductive contact or a finish keep-out? |
| Service access | Can the assembly be inspected, tested and repaired in the intended order? |
Specify the finish and secondary operations
Define the approved finish, appearance requirements, labels and any masking. Account for finish buildup where parts locate or contact one another. Identify installed hardware, threads, deburring requirements and the surfaces that are visually important. Separate cosmetic acceptance from dimensions that affect function so the inspection plan remains clear.
For example, a connector opening can satisfy its nominal dimensions while a finish or adjacent bend restricts latch movement. An assembly fit check should include the actual connector, mating cable and fastening sequence. A rendered model alone may not reveal the handling space required by an operator.
Prepare a comparable quote request
- Provide drawings, models, assembly views and the intended quantity.
- List material, finish and hardware requirements with approved alternatives if any.
- Identify critical interfaces and the evidence needed for first-article acceptance.
- Separate tooling or fixture charges from recurring part cost.
- State packaging and any system-assembly work included in the request.
