SAP and mSAP in PCB fabrication refer to semi-additive and modified semi-additive processing. They are copper-conductor formation approaches. They should not be confused with adhesive promoters or described as particular glues for flexible circuits.
Define the process before comparing it
Semi-additive approaches form conductors through patterned copper deposition on a thin conductive starting layer, followed by removal of unwanted seed material. Modified versions use a different starting copper construction and process sequence. Terminology and implementation should be confirmed with the actual fabricator rather than inferred from an acronym alone.
For a flexible circuit, the substrate, conductor geometry and required mechanical behavior must be considered together. A process capable of fine routing does not automatically establish that the resulting construction supports a particular bend condition.
Questions for a flexible-circuit review
| Input | Decision to resolve |
|---|---|
| Conductor geometry | Finished width, spacing, thickness and permitted variation |
| Substrate construction | Material, reinforcement and compatibility with the selected process |
| Mechanical use | Static installation bends or repeated motion under defined conditions |
| Acceptance evidence | Representative electrical and mechanical evaluation of the actual construction |
Compare an achievable alternative
Create a representative routing region using the proposed process rules. Compare it with a supported alternative while keeping the circuit and mechanical requirements constant. Record which features require the finer process and whether another layer arrangement or component placement would solve the same constraint.
Do not compare only the advertised minimum trace width. Copper thickness, feature shape, material behavior and finished tolerances also matter. Ask the supplier to return a marked construction proposal and identify every exception to the released design.
Control the handoff
Document the selected process and material construction with the fabrication drawing. If the supplier proposes a different copper-formation route, review its effect on geometry, electrical behavior and mechanical verification before approval. Preserve the as-built configuration with prototype results so later orders can be compared with the accepted baseline.
